The Problem

Five numbers.
One broken status quo.

Operators have no time to find the optimal box for mixed orders. The wrong box is always available. The right one runs out first.

void space
01 · The void

Brands think 25% void. Reality is 64%.

Independent measurement puts average e-commerce box void at 40–64%. Operators estimate their own at 25%. That gap — invisible and structural — is precisely what Tetrik quantifies.

02 · The boom

E-commerce volume grew 25% post-pandemic. Box sizes didn't adapt.

EU online retail hit €887 billion in 2023, up 25% since 2019. Fulfilment operations scaled fast — box assortments didn't. Most warehouses still run on the same 3–5 box sizes they had in 2018.

Overflowing cardboard recycling bins in Amsterdam

03 · The overflow

The recycling stream is full. Online shopping increase and oversized boxes are why.

Cities like Amsterdam deployed dedicated "Kartonvreter" cardboard trucks in response to streets overwhelmed by e-commerce packaging. The EU generates 32 million tonnes of cardboard packaging waste per year. A half-empty box takes up the same space in a recycling container as a full one — multiplied across billions of shipments, the inefficiency becomes a city-scale infrastructure problem.

04 · The emissions

You're paying to truck empty air across Europe.

Dimensional weight pricing means carriers charge for the space a box occupies — not just its mass. Right-sizing reduces DIM weight charges and cuts transport CO₂ by up to 30% per shipment by increasing truck load efficiency.

05 · The clock

The clock is running. PPWR caps void at 50%.

EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation Article 24 caps void at ≤50% for grouped, transport, and e-commerce packaging from 1 January 2030 — or 36 months after methodology publication, whichever is later (realistically Feb 2031). Crucially, the regulation defines filler materials (paper cuttings, air cushions, bubble wrap, sponge filler, foam wool, wood wool, polystyrene) as empty space, not product. Methodology due Feb 2028. Main provisions apply Aug 2026. Fines up to €200K (NL/DE) or €100K (FR) per violation.

Cardboard boxes piled outside Amsterdam residential buildings
Amsterdam · 2023

When the boxes don't fit the bins, the street becomes the bin.

Amsterdam's waste management authority deployed specialised "Kartonvreter" (cardboard eater) trucks after residential neighbourhoods became overwhelmed by e-commerce packaging. The oversized box problem isn't abstract — it's visible on every street corner after a peak shopping period.

Regulation

The EU just put a number on your void space.
50% is the limit.

Feb 2025
PPWR enters into force

Regulation (EU) 2025/40 takes effect on 11 February 2025. Article 24 establishes the void space rule — and explicitly defines filler materials (paper cuttings, air cushions, bubble wrap, sponge filler, foam wool, wood wool, polystyrene) as empty space, not product.

Aug 2026
Main provisions apply

Core PPWR obligations take effect across all EU member states. Brands must begin adapting packaging design, procurement, and technical documentation.

Feb 2028
Sales packaging deadline + methodology published

Two things land on the same date: (a) sales packaging must already be reduced to "minimum necessary"; (b) European Commission deadline to publish the official empty-space calculation methodology. Formula: (Box Volume − Product Volume) ÷ Box Volume × 100.

2030–31
≤50% void limit enforced

The 50% cap applies from 1 January 2030 OR 36 months after methodology publication, whichever is later. If the Commission uses its full window to Feb 2028, real enforcement shifts to 12 February 2031. Fines up to €200K (NL/DE) or €100K (FR) per violation.

€200K
Max fine per violation — NL & DE (France: up to €100K)

PPWR Article 68 delegates enforcement to member states with penalties that must be "effective, proportionate, and dissuasive" — designed to outweigh the economic benefit of non-compliance. Netherlands: avg €15K, up to €200K for repeat violations, plus €5K/week ongoing penalties. Germany: up to €200K per violation. France: up to €100K per violation. Plus product recalls, market withdrawal orders, customs holds, and marketplace delisting.

The Solution

Find the right box.
Before it costs you.

Tetrik analyses your order history and SKU mix — dimensions, combinations, frequency — and uses machine learning to find the optimal set of box sizes that minimises void across your real shipment patterns.

Upload your order history.

Drop in a CSV of your orders with SKU dimensions and quantities. Tetrik reads your real shipment mix — not a theoretical catalogue — to understand what combinations actually leave your warehouse.

Machine learning finds the sweet spot.

Machine learning analyses your SKU dimension combinations and order mix patterns to recommend the smallest set of box sizes — S, M, L — that covers your full order distribution with maximum space efficiency.

Box size analysis. CO₂ savings. PPWR compliance.

Get your optimal box set, projected void reduction, CO₂ savings, and a compliance readiness score against the PPWR 50% threshold — all from a single CSV upload.
